CARMARTHEN, WEST WALES

Carmarthen sits on the banks of the River Towy and is home to Trinity College, West Wales General Hospital and the headquarters of Dyfed Powys Police. Merlin was reputedly born in a cave near Carmarthen, and the town has remains of a medieval castle and roman amphitheatre.

Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin) is a historic town in the County of Carmarthenshire, West Wales. It has a population of approx 14,000, a large proportion being welsh speakers, and is the oldest town in Wales.

Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin)

Carmarthen is the oldest town in Wales .... site of strategic Roman and Norman settlements .... granted a charter by King John in 1201 ....The Black Book of Carmarthen (c. 1170-1230), was written there .... Merlin was born near Carmarthen in 480 .... fishing by coracle still survives on the River Towy.

Merlin, The Old Oak, & the Black Book of Carmarthen

Called the 'Black Book' because it's got a black cover (obviously) .... it was written in 12th - 13th century, totally in Welsh, and the best bit of all is that it mentions Merlin (Myrddin)..... the legendary wizard ..... you know, the one who was best buddies with King Arthur.
The book itself is kept at The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth

The most exciting bit about this story of Merlin and his magic is the 'Old Oak' though - a truly magnificent “work of art” that sat quite happily for centuries on the corner of Priory Street.

Entombed in a stone base and surrounded by steel spikes it's plaque said "When Merlin's Oak shall tumble down ....Then will fall Carmarthen Town" (or something along those lines) ..... the reason I can't quite remember is that when you're a nipper on your way home from school and you have to walk past the 'Old Oak' on a dark winter’s night you don't so much walk as run ...... that's Merlin's Oak and it's full of magic and stuff. Anyway, that Old Oak never did do anybody any harm, even when they ripped it up a few years ago - were they vandalising one of the World's greatest historical monuments when they took it away, or brave heroes challenging the might of Merlin and all his mystical powers. I don't know really, that's for you to decide ... but we wish they’d left it there.
